There have been lots of inquiries ’bout the hammocks and swings lately – probably a spring thing. The fine folks at the Hammock Company are offering our guests a 20% discount on all their great stuff. Check them out and when you find what you need/want type in this secret code EDEN20 for your discount. Just like the old days when the prize in a box of Cracker Jacks was real. Oh yea, don’t get the rope hammocks. They aren’t nearly as comfortable as the quilted hammocks. A little inside information – I recommend taking a newspaper or magazine to the hammock with you. This way you can cover your face and folks won’t catch you asleep with your mouth open. Just a suggestion. I have been busted by Gena from southwest Michigan for not blogging more…. so hold on to your hat. I am coming out of my ‘blog closet’ and I am going to be a blogging fool. Gena you will live to regret this. Be seeing ya, Mike ![]() March 17, 2010
Michael Doucet (of Beausoleil fame) and friend Michael Pillot dropped by this week for a visit and a nice surprise it was. The Mr. D. & Mr. P. were on the Prairie Home Companion cruise bopping around the Caribbean and had a small layover in Key West. I hadn’t seen Michael D. since the band stayed with us many years ago. He broke his leg and is on crutches – though you should have seen him on a bicycle. This photo is of him in what is called a ‘sand wheelchair’ and was taken in Marathon, Florida last month during a benefit concert. The three of us named Mike went to El Siboney and had white bean soup and Cuban Mixes. It doesn’t get any better than that.
Beausoleil’s latest CD, ‘Alligator Purse’ on Yep Roc Records, was overseen by Michael P. (whose day job is television producer). Playing with the boys on this CD are Natalie Merchant, Garth Hudson, Rosewell Rudd, Bill Keith and others. I love covers and there are several on this disc. This link to Yep Roc has tour info as well as CD cuts….take a listen. Oh yea, you can buy the music there too – $15.99 CD or $9.99 download (instant gratification). Yep Roc is a great record label and has lots of my kind of music. Music guaranteed not to bore. The complete Beausoleil library of more CDs than I have toes and fingers can be found on Amazon.com – again buy the disc or download the MP3. See ya on flip side, Mike

I have been getting lots of comments and inquirers about my ‘moon boots’ lately. They are actually MBT’s and I get them from footwearetc.com They are amazing for old legs (ankles and feet too) like mine. If anyone has a pair, don’t throw them away when the soles wear out. You can get them replaced for $65 (soles and the foam cushion) and they pay for the return shipping. I have had my oldest pair for two years and got them resoled about six months ago. They are the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn. Don’t take my word for it, give ‘em a try. Free shipping both ways from footwearetc.com So return them if you don’t like them and nothing lost. I have three pairs and rotate them daily. I won’t ever wear anything else. I feel like I am walking on clouds but they take a bit of getting use to. Oh yea, there is a special break in period. You only wear them for two hours for the first day, four hours the second day and then tighten your seat belt. They are almost like that pair of new Converse tennis shoes you got each summer when you were a kid. Remember the ones that were so much faster than the old pair?
My favorite style of BMT’s are the Chapa and they are being phased out and are on sale. Anyone out there wearing MBT’s? Drop me a line and let me know what you think.
See ya, Mike

Thanks for all the votes!!!!! Well we are standing strong at 26%. There are still a few more days left to vote so if you have not yet please do Glee Green Living awards. The staff and I have worked very hard for the past few years to try and make Eden House a green hotel. I am sure you are aware of the many changes you see in the rooms but also behind the scenes there are many. We have put in solar power for the pool/hot tub, water heaters on demand, recycle as much as we can, a new washing system, I could go on and on. We really hope to do well so the staff can really feel like there amazing effort is noticed and as always we are open to suggestions of any kind. Cheers Elizabeth ![]() February 15, 2010
Did anyone check the Farmer’s Almanac? This poop is for the birds. I know, here I am whining and you guys are up to your chins in show. I just feel so bad for our guests – we don’t have any heat. We have bumped the pool up to 89 degrees and the spa to 101 but the guests can only drink so much hot chocolate and booze. It is starting to feel like The Shining Key West style. ”All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” I have taken the voodoo doll out of the freezer and have put him in the oven. Was it Martha and the Vandellas who did ‘Heat Wave’? The calvary is on the way – but if they don’t get soon, it will be too late. Love, Mike ![]() February 11, 2010
The Eden House online store is up and running. Who would have thunk it? We are starting to go back and reproduce t-shirts from thirty years ago. I have been planning to do this for the past decade. My how time slips away. Also working on getting copies of some photos of the property taken during the filming of Criss Cross. Henrietta’s world famous Coconut Strips, regular and key lime, will also be available. My mouth is starting to water as I write this. Elizabeth keeps telling me if I would do these letters more often they would be much shorter. I think she means they would be much more interesting. Sorry to take up so much of your time if you have bothered to read this infomercial. ![]() Ambrosia is back and they are better than ever. You might remember them when they were on Virginia St many years ago. They call themselves a sushi restaurant – sake bar. I think they are much more. I especially like the edamame to kick things off. The avocado spring mix salad is delicious, huge to boot not to mention great price. Numerous rolls to choose from but one warning – steer clear of the tempura. Way too greasy for my taste and it was the same when they were on Virginia St. Try the Teriyaki Fish – you can’t go wrong. My favorite desert (perhaps on the entire island) is the Fondants au Chocolat. I’m not going to try to describe it – JUST GET IT! You can thank me later. Patricia will greet you and tell her I said hi. 1401 Simonton St (south) lunch 11:30-2 M-F Dinner 6-10 daily 293-0304 La Creperie Key West, this place rocks! But take my advice and start with the sweets. My favorite this week is the ‘fresh pineapple w/coconut and caramel’ crepe or is it banana, sugar and key lime w/ gelato. If you are still hungry after your dessert, how about the Norwegian Smoked Salmon w/a light lemon & chives cream sauce – the crepe is made with buckwheat? special omelets daily. My drink of choice is chai tea on ice. Herbal teas, espresso and cappuccino also available. Sandwiches and Panini if you must. Owners Sylvie & Yolande have been selling their wares from a small cart around town for years and now their new location on the corner of Thomas & Petronia Streets (Bahama Village). Tell the ladies I send my love. 7 days a week – 7:30 til 5 PM 300 Petronia 305-517-6799 (Cash Only-ATM coming soon) I’m bringing back Besame Mucho by popular demand. The service has improved greatly – just like in the old days. By this I mean the owners are there. Soy candles, unique jewelry, lots of interesting stuff you won’t find any place else and they offer free off street parking. When I use the words unique and interesting I mean it ain’t cheap but for that special person you can’t go wrong – good value. Mon – Sat 10 10 til 6 PM Sunday 10 til 4 PM 315 Petronia Street 305-294-1928 ![]() |
