John had a break in engagements between Moscow and Paris and found a little time to come play at The Eden House this next November 1st. Or was it Frankenmuth, Michigan and Madison, Wisconsin, I am confused but I know for sure he will be here on November 1st for Happy Hour. Come early stay late you Parrotheads.

Guitar Player

Friends walk up to me on the street every day (both of them) and ask, “do you still have that old guitar at the hotel?” And I always answer the same, “yep.”

For those of you that want to visit the Eden House and do a little pickin’ while you are here – we have the answer. We keep an old acoustic behind the door in the gift shop…so help yourself. If you have trouble locating it just ask at the desk. Guitar Dan cleans and re-strings it when he is down and even plays a few tunes by the pool. I always request John Prine.

Yes, they’re going to put me in the movies and all I gotta do is act naturally

The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones just released some of the songs that ended up on the cutting room floor when they originally released the album in May, 1972. The original album was 18 songs and is to this day is one of my all time favorites chunks of music. Needless to say, the 70′s were a very special time for me – we thought it would never end. I still think it was the all time best decade for music. Perhaps the decade should be from 1965 to 1975. Yes, this would be my pick. Strange that it coincides with the Vietnam conflict. Sorry, for the transgression.

When the Stones recorded ‘Exile’ in the south of France they has left England over unpaid taxes and they were not in another time zone but on another planet. Maybe this is why it is such a great album. These new ten songs are on a CD with the original 18 songs. I would wait until the disc goes on sale. A fan of the Stones will want these songs and they do compliment the originals songs but they were left out for two reasons. The first album was already two discs to begin with and these songs aren’t as good – plain and simple.

‘Jamming With Edward!’ is another great disc by the Stones accompanied by Ry Cooder and Nicky Hopkins. It was recorded in 1969 during the ‘Let It Bleed’ session and released in 1972. As the title implies, they are jamming. This can be a tough to find one to find. If you have trouble finding it, let me know. Six songs and about 35 minutes long.

James Luther 'Jim' Dickinson & Alex Chilton

James Luther ‘Jim’ Dickinson and Alex Chilton , two of my favorite music people have recently passed away. They are right at the top of my fave list, both are from Memphis and are musically linked in more ways than one.

Among James many accomplishments was playing piano on the Rolling Stones’ hit “Wild Horses”, producing numerous artists albums and releasing several solo and group albums himself. As lead singer for the Box Tops, Alex enjoyed at the age of 16 a number-one international hit, “The Letter.” He also released a boat load of albums with The Box Tops, Big Star and as a solo artist. Alex is a bit twisted which is something I look for in an artist. If you haven’t already noticed this by the music played at the Eden House.

James produced much of Alex’s music over the years and both were a major influence in the Memphis blues arena – the blue eyed blues, that is. James was 68 and Alex was 59 at the time of their demise. Doug Sahm and now this – I’m just not sure. Check ‘em out and if you are just a bit off center you will love these guys. For example, a couple of my favorites of James’ are ‘Free Beer Tomorrow’ and ‘Jungle Jim and the Voodoo Tiger’. I especially like ‘Set’ and ‘Alex Chilton 1970′, solo Chilton. Give yourself a treat and as Lou Reed would say, “take a walk on the wildside.”

When times were simpler and the 8 transistor radio ate up the battery in a couple hours.

Three Mikes On A Roll

Michael Doucet (of Beausoleil fame) and friend Michael Pillot dropped by this week for a visit and a nice surprise it was. The Mr. D. & Mr. P. were on the Prairie Home Companion cruise bopping around the Caribbean and had a small layover in Key West. I hadn’t seen Michael D. since the band stayed with us many years ago. He broke his leg and is on crutches – though you should have seen him on a bicycle. This photo is of him in what is called a ‘sand wheelchair’ and was taken in Marathon, Florida last month during a benefit concert. The three of us named Mike went to El Siboney and had white bean soup and Cuban Mixes. It doesn’t get any better than that.

Beausoleil’s latest CD, ‘Alligator Purse’ on Yep Roc Records, was overseen by Michael P. (whose day job is television producer). Playing with the boys on this CD are Natalie Merchant, Garth Hudson, Rosewell Rudd, Bill Keith and others. I love covers and there are several on this disc. This link to Yep Roc has tour info as well as CD cuts….take a listen. Oh yea, you can buy the music there too – $15.99 CD or $9.99 download (instant gratification). Yep Roc is a great record label and has lots of my kind of music. Music guaranteed not to bore. Paste Magazine

Yep, the music. Walked through the lobby today and caught J.J. Cale’s, ‘Crazy Mama’ from his album/CD, “Naturally” (1971). Does it get any better than that? Moving on to the topic at hand, Paste Magazine.
I used to get this magazine in the hard copy and loved it. Now I get it digitally and love it even more. Check out this site for a plethora of music, video and movie information and lots of worthless lists. I especially like the lists. The ‘best of this or that’. Free downloads too.

As promised – John Frinzi’s latest CD, “Shoreline”. John has just released it and it is a ‘keeper’ (ain’t throwing this one back). Tom Corcoran co wrote several of the songs, adding to his bag of tricks. You can listen to the cuts and purchase the disc from CD Baby within the next month (I hope/think). The music sounds like it was wafting through the streets of Key West in the 70″s. John will be preforming at the Eden House during happy hour on November 1st. Does it get any better than that? Cold drinks and good music.

Radio Margaritaville Live From Eden House

JD is a DJ on Radio Margaritaville Wednesday through Sunday 1 to 5 PM. A while back JD did a live feed from room 301. Possibly his best show ever. Self centered you say?
